Michigan was the twenty-sixth state to join the Union in 1837. Today, the Great Lakes State is home to 10 million residents. Generally, a Michigan phone number will contain any of the 12 Michigan area codes, depending on the city or town. But, you can always see a caller’s exact location by looking up the number on a Michigan phone numbers database.
At first, Michigan phone numbers used to be an alphanumeric combination of two letters and five numbers, i.e., the 2L-5N format. The two letters represented the switchboard a phone owner uses, while the five-digit number was the subscriber’s unique identifier.
However, with the alphanumeric system, not everyone who wanted a phone number could get one. So, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator created a 7-digit numbers-only system to expand the pool of available phone numbers. Still, this 7-digit system soon faced the same limitation from the alphanumeric system – there were more subscribers than available numbers.
So, the industry expanded this pool using area codes, depending on geographic location.
To put it into perspective, take your typical Detroit phone number, 313-NYY-XXXX, and think of it as a physical address.
313 is the area code, representing a small geographical area within Michigan – in this case, Detroit. The next three digits, NYY, make up the prefix code. The prefix code narrows down the call recipient to a particular town or street in Detroit.
The last four digits, XXXX, is the line number, a unique identifier for the phone number owner. In a house address, the line number would be a house number, flat number, or room number.
Michigan started with three area codes in 1947, which was enough to cover phone owners at the time. Since then, the state has created 12 area codes using overlay and geographic split to let old residents keep old area codes while introducing new Michigan area codes.
Besides connecting you with the person you wish to call, area codes also let you identify an unknown caller’s location. But you will need a phone number search on a Michigan phone numbers database to get specific information about the caller’s address and related public records.
Several persons can have the same area code if they live in the same area. Likewise, close neighbors can have the same prefix code. However, no two persons can have the same line number.
